The Magician Hits
Jackpot in Las
Vegas
Strengthens POY Candidacy
Efren Reyes cast another ballot for Player of the Year
honors with a convincing victory at the 2nd Annual
Gabriel’s Las
Vegas 9-Ball Open. Reyes of the
Philippines
bested Niels Feijen in the finals 10-7. Reyes waltzed through the
field, posting a perfect 7-0 record while winning over 63% of his
games. This triumph combined with his second place last week in
New York and wins at
the Mid Atlantic 9-Ball Championship and the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball
Tour Stop 2 give him a rather impressive resume going into the last
four months of the season. Reyes earned $10,000 for his superb
effort.
Niels Feijen from the
Netherlands
underscored once again the global nature of the game with his strong
performance. After losing to the red hot Charlie Williams, last
weeks winner in New
York, he reeled off four straight on the
losers side to reach the finals. Among his victims were Williams (a
10-5 payback) and Archer by the same score. Feijen won 58.0% of his
games in nine matches. Feijen was consoled with a $5,000 check for
second place.
Johnny Archer cruised through his first three matches before
edging Max Eberle 10-9 to earn a hot seat berth with Reyes. The
Magician promptly dispatched Archer to the losers side finals by a
solid 10-6 margin. Archer then absorbed a 10-5 loss to Feijen.
Archer, who won 56% of his games for the week, was consoled with
third place. Archer’s consistently fine play this year has also
stamped him as a strong contender for Player of the Year. Archer has
won the Brunswick Pro Players Championship, the IBC Western Canadian
Open, and the Predator Central Florida Pro 9-Ball Open. In addition,
he had recorded two thirds and a fourth in other major
events.
